NEA Part 1 - Media Language and Representations Analysis

Post 1 –  How is media language used in 2 media products to create meaning through constructing representations and following genre conventions?

Choose TWO front covers and TWO double spread articles from educational magazines.

 Eco Kids Planet magazine cover

The main characters on this front cover are two dolphins, there are also other animals in it. The dolphins are represented positively because the back ground is bright and they are smiling. All around of the dolphins thee are pieces of texts to do with animal friendships so this makes them seem like our friends. The background and foreground are both really colourful which show us that the brand is positive. they are using a mid-shot so that we can see the dolphins swimming. The colour blue connotes wisdom and trust. Wisdom is usually associated with dolphins and most animals are trustworthy so it was a good base colour, and dolphins are aquatic creatures. The lighting is focused on the dolphins and the background water to create a very cinematic shot.

The main characters are three male vikings that seem angry/ ready to fight, this was typical for the viking era. They are wearing armour so they could be going to fight and the background shows more spears so it shows that there could possibly be an army of them, the background is a monotone to put emphasis on the vikings. They use a long-shot to capture everything in the scene. The orange and brown tones connote pride and strength which was what vikings were about. Their body language is aggressive which links to their culture.

The main character is a serious black male. I believe that he is represented negatively because he looks angry and defensive. The lighting changes from one half off his face to the other. This could connote him being two faced. The grey could connote isolation or sadness whereas the red shows passion or anger.

NEA Statement of intent

My magazine will be and educational magazine that will be aimed at 10 – 13 year olds. It will based on the turn based RPG (role-playing game) Pokemon and how to play the card game (TCG – trading card game). My magazine will be aimed for people who are new to the Pokemon TCG, or for people who want to re-familiarise themselves with the rules. I would say that it is for a niche audience because the Pokemon games and anime (Show) are more popular than the TCG. The magazine will include a detailed step by step tutorial on how to play the card game alongside pictures of the card so that people can follow it more easily. In this task i will be deciding the people that will be helping me to take pictures or provide props too me. Corey Law : He is a good friend of mine and could help provide the cards and / or props that i will need to enhance the readers / viewers experience. NEA Part 6 - Product Style Profile

In this task i will be planning and creating sketches that should reflect or help me on what i would do in my real magazine. I believe sketching is important because it will help visualise my 'final' product, this will help me improve my work. Corey Law: I like the third one. Andrew Quirke : I prefer the third one. Priyan Rathinraj: I prefer the third one because it has pictures of what the cards are. From my research i can see that people like the third one the most because it has more information and is more developed. This went along with my predictions that the most interactive one and the one that provided to most information would be the most popular.
